AUSTRALIA |
International matches and tournaments ridden by Australia,
or featuring Australian riders, are listed here.
Great Britain teams of the 1960's and 1970's usually included Australian
riders, as Australia was not affiliated directly to the F.I.M, but rather
through the A-C.U of Great Britain. Australians also rode for (amongst
others) Australasia , various Rest of the World teams, Overseas, and
(if they rode for a Scottish club) Scotland.
Several unofficial tours of Australia by teams from England took
place prior to the first Official Tour in 1934-35. Until recently,
little was known of these unofficial tours but, thanks to some
detailed research by Ross Garrigan and Barry Forsyth in
Australia, comprehensive details of the Unofficial Test Series
of 1932-33 and 1933-34 are now available on this website. In
addition, details of a second (unofficial) tour to Western Australia
in 1936-37 are also included, thanks to Ross and Barry.

Australia's greatest pre-war star was Arthur "Bluey" Wilkinson, whose career peaked in 1938 when he became World Champion, after riding for West Ham since 1929. In 1939 he promoted at Sheffield, but was sadly killed in a traffic accident in Australia in 1940 |
